Porto is a vibe.
Both kids instantly relaxed and commented on how much they liked the feeling of this place. From the green spaces (where the lawns are mowed) to the food they are enjoying. Whilst there is an expectation of learning and speaking a little French in Paris, there is no such thing in Porto, but if you are 7 & 10 years old and making an effort to speak a little Portuguese to the wait staff, it really goes a long way. I also think the basic polite manners of Kiwi's when getting their food is also a bit rare. So no matter where we eat, we are always looked after.

The two main areas of Porto on either side of the bridge are quite different. Porto with picturesque buildings, cobblestone narrow streets and historic monuments is like spending time with your grandparents when you were young. It's old world charming, a little rickety but with loads of character and lovely locals (when you can spot them amongst the tourists). And Gaia - just as old as the Porto side (and probably a little older) is like a younger, more hip town with wide areas for walking along the river, all the port sellers are lined up with lively music, some newer restaurants, and you can feel that vibe of a rebellious teenager.

The river bridges tour on a day with 28 degrees and little to no wind on an ancient boat with no shade was relaxing for part of the trip and just melting for the rest. The gratis port wine at the end of the trip made up for it. I think the look of the boats and being on the water was more exciting than the actual trip itself.

Of all the things we have experienced here - it's the markets on Corpus Christi day that make the kids day. A henna artist in the mix and Kaia sat down for her temp tattoo. She talked the ear off the artist asking all sorts of things about his artwork the age he started etc. Nek minnit the German beer drinking dude with his artist wife are also in the conversation with her. Fomo sets in and Zach is now getting his tat as well.

Today we are off to Mercado Bolhao, can't wait to eat the food here!

Love the tattoo Kaia. It's awesome. Sounds a little bit more relaxed in Porto than in Paris. 💞
